"Unpredictable Early Hours Listening"
Victorian producer / multi-instrumentalistApell has previously released two albums of eclectic downbeat electronics, his most recent being 2004’s Beaver Street & Beyond.
Four years on, this third self-released album, Reconstituted, sees Apell introducing more vocals and song-based elements into his eclectic fusion of trip-hop, drum n bass and dubby electronics, with even a couple of covers creeping into the tracklisting; Neil Young’s Don’t Let It Bring You Down, and George Harrison’s oft-overlooked White Album contribution Long, Long, Long. It’s the choice of both artists that hints at the vibes on offer here – in this case, noodly downbeat electronics that certainly provide plenty of chill-out / background listening, even if the repeated use of junglist breakbeats does introduce a slightly dated feel at points here.
Still, heads looking for a bit of unpredictable early hours listening should find something to like here. - threedworld.com.au
